| Anatomy of the
SPINE
|

|
|
The spinal column is made up of five
sections and consists of 33 bones known as vertebrae. Cushion-like
disks separate the first 24 vertetrae, giving the spine the ability
to bend and flex.
The spinal cord is an extension of
the brain. It is protected by a bony structure called the vertebral
or spinal column. The spinal cord is covered with the same three
membranes as the brain, the meninges. There is a wide subarachnoid
space that surrounds the spinal cord. This space contains the
cerebrospinal fluid.
