Medical Plaza Center of Fort Worth today announced the appointment of George F. Cravens, M.D., F.A.C.S. and founder of The Center for Neurological Disorders to its new position of Director for Neurosciences.
The new center will share in Plaza's institution-wide emphasis on the development and perfection of minimally-invasive techniques for correcting structural abnormalities in the body, the leadership for which Dr. Cravens is well-suited. For more than two decades, he has been involved in the complex arena of diagnosing and treating brain tumors as well as the complications from strokes and neurological problems. He is an expert on brain aneurysms and arteriovenous malformations as well as the surgical repair of peripheral nerve injuries and complex spine care.
"George Cravens represents something rare in the world of healthcare, in that he combines superb skill in the surgical suite with a passionate interest in the best that clinical research offers," said Troy Villarreal, CHE, president and chief executive officer of Plaza Medical Center. "We are pleased to be able to place him at the helm of a major expansion in one of Plaza's primary specialties."
"The Departments of Neurology and Neurosurgery at Plaza are already an excellent collaborative program in terms of patient care," said Dr. Cravens. "I am looking forward to maximizing how our strong clinical practice benefits from expanded medical research."
A native of Fort Worth, Dr. Cravens graduated from the University of Texas at Austin and received his medical degree from Southwestern Medical School at the UT Health Science Center at Dallas (now UT Southwestern Medical Center). His residencies included ones at Louisiana State Medical Center Charity Hospital and Ochsner Foundation in New Orleans and the University of Toronto's Sunnybrook Hospital Regional Trauma Center, division of neurosurgery. He also held a fellowship in microneurosurgery at Neuroschirurgische Universtate Klink in Zurich, Switzerland.
Dr. Cravens is a diplomat of the American Board of Neurological Surgery and is a member of the American Association of Neurological Surgery, the North American Spine Society, the Southern Neurological Society and the Congress of Neurological Surgeons. He is also a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a member of the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery.
