Neurology is the medical discipline of the diagnosis and non-surgical treatment of diseases of the brain, spinal cord, nerves and muscles. Neurologic treatment consists of the diagnosis of the disorder, isolation of its cause (if known) and its treatment, as well as the management of the disease symptoms and consequences that will maximize the patient's quality of life and ability to function.
Patients who need evaluation, management and rehabilitation of neurological problems can receive those services from the physicians at the Center of Neurological Disorders. The Center most commonly treats patients with headaches, seizures, stroke, memory difficulties, meningitis, neck and back disorders, multiple sclerosis, myasthenia gravis, Parkinson's Disease and neuropathy, among many others.
The tools most commonly used to supplement the physician's clinical skills are imaging modalities such as x-rays, CT scans, MRIs, angiograms and myelograms, electrophysiologic studies such as EEG, EMG, NCV and EPs, and laboratory evaluations including spinal fluid analysis.
Neurorehabilitation is a relatively new subspecialty. The CND physicians have done full residency training in Neurology and additional fellowship trainings in Neurorehabilitation. They have special knowledge and training to treat and rehabilitate patients with neurological problems like strokes, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord problems including injuries, cognitive dysfunction, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's Disease, other neurodegenerative disorders and peripheral neuropathy.
The neurorehabilitation specialty combines the benefits of both a neurologist and rehabilitative medicine, enabling patients to develop a relationship with just one physician. -
