Gamma Knife Radiosurgery Mission

To provide alternative treatment to open skull surgery and whole brain radiation therapy in the treatment of certain disorders.

What is the Gamma Knife?

The Gamma Knife is a dedicated instrument that successfully treats lesions and abnormalities in the brain with no incision. Instead, it uses a concentrated radiation dose from 201 Cobalt-60 sources to deliver focused radiation to non-invasively treat certain conditions in the brain. Gamma Knife radiosurgery is a safe, effective and cost saving alternative to conventional neurosurgery and whole brain radiation therapy for those patients who meet the criteria. It is the preferred treatment option for a wide range of benign and malignant brain tumors and vascular malformations.

Types of Conditions Treated

Gamma Knife indications include intracranial tumors, vascular malformations, and functional disorders. Potential patient indications include ateriovenous malformations (AVM's), meningiomas, acoustic neuromas, gliomas, pineal region tumors, metastatic brain tumors, pituitary adenomas and trigeminal neuralgia.

Benefits

Gamma Knife is a low cost treatment alternative with a cost of 30-70% less than alternate treatment modalities, including traditional open skull surgery.

To date, the Gamma Knife has shown impressive long term results with improved clinical outcomes over traditional treatment options. Gamma Knife patients are usually able to leave the hospital after an overnight stay and resume normal activities 2448 hours post Gamma Knife procedure.

Patients who undergo Gamma Knife surgery are less likely to experience complications and more likely to experience a positive outcome at a lower cost. There are many patient benefits including: elimination of complications of invasive procedures, speedy recovery with a minimal convalescence period, rapid return to workplace, minimization of complications of radiation therapy, virtually painless procedure, single treatment session and low mortality.

Gamma Knife has been very effective in treating brain tumors and this procedure can avoid many of the  unfavorable effects of whole brain radiation. It is recognized; however, that there is still indications for whole brain radiation, and in many cases both modalities are used together for an even better outcome.
